Rest days
Muscles grow and nervous systems recover between sessions, not only during them. Rest days are part of the plan.
How many rest days?
| Days training | Typical rest |
|---|---|
| 3 days/week | 4 rest / light days |
| 4 days/week | 3 rest days |
| 5–6 days/week | 1–2 rest days (often with easier movement) |
Beginners usually do better with full rest between full-body days. Advanced lifters on Push/Pull/Legs still need sleep and easy days.
What counts as rest?
- Complete rest from hard training.
- Easy walking, mobility, or very light cardio.
- Not: “rest day” that turns into a secret max-effort session.
Signs you need more recovery
- Persistent strength drops across several sessions.
- Poor sleep, irritability, lingering joint niggles.
- Motivation crashing for weeks (not just one off day).
Deload every 6–10 weeks if you train hard: cut volume by ~40–50% for a week, keep technique sharp.
